1. Traditions:

You want to make sure you have an officiant that is knowledgeable of your cultural traditions. If you’re not fully aware of all of your religious customs, be sure to include your parents in this process to avoid any confusion. It’s best if you can have him/her outline how he/she would perform the ceremony.

2. Language:

Clarify which language the priest is comfortable performing the ceremony in. If you have a preference, communicate that to him/her and discuss it openly.

3. Marriage License:

Some priests are not licensed to sign a day-of marriage license, and are more-so involved to spiritually and culturally officiate weddings. In this case, the couple would have to get legally court married on a separate day which would be their official wedding date as stated on their marriage license.

4. Experience:

Be sure to ask how many weddings he/she has officiated so far. You want someone who is experienced and comfortable speaking in front of a large group of people.

5. Referral:

The best and easiest way to choose an officiant is to consider someone you’ve seen in action already. Reach out to your friends and family that are married already to ask of their experiences and if they would recommend their officiant.

6. Attire:

I know it seems silly, but don’t be afraid to ask how he/she will be dressed on the day of. Face it, the last thing you want is someone like Joey Tribbiani in an Army uniform stealing the show!
